Memorial Day
Memorial Day is observed on the last Monday in May to honor and remember members of the U.S. armed forces who died while serving their country. It is a time for communities, families, and individuals to reflect on the sacrifices made by military personnel and to express gratitude for their service.
How to Observe and Honor Respectfully
Distinguish Memorial Day from Veterans Day: Memorial Day honors those who died in military service; Veterans Day honors all who have served.
If attending a parade or ceremony, follow the posted etiquette and show respect during moments of silence, the national anthem, and flag-related observances.
Consider supporting veterans’ organizations or participating in volunteer activities that assist military families and survivors.
Flags and Decorations: Flags are commonly flown at half-staff until noon and then raised to full staff for the remainder of the day. Families and communities place flags, flowers, or markers on graves to honor the fallen.
Visiting Cemeteries: Individuals and families may visit cemeteries to place flowers or flags and to clean or decorate gravesites of loved ones.
Moments of Silence: Observing a moment of silence at 3:00 p.m. local time is a national tradition encouraged to honor those who gave their lives.
