Ron’s legacy and dedication of 31 years to the Orfordville Fire and Ambulance District. As Fire Chief for 25 years, he transformed a small volunteer fire department into a vital community resource
Ronald G. Nelson, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and community leader, passed away peacefully on September 11, 2025, at Rock Haven Nursing Home, at the age of 89. A lifelong resident of Orfordville, Wisconsin, Ron was born on April 4, 1936, to Joe and Silvia (Roen) Nelson. He was later united in marriage to his high school sweetheart, Delores Gilbert, with whom he shared a remarkable 70 years of love and partnership.
One of Ron’s greatest legacy lies in his unwavering dedication of 31 years to the Orfordville Fire and Ambulance District. As Fire Chief for 25 years, he transformed a small volunteer fire department into a vital community resource. Under his leadership, the department saw the construction of a new building, the acquisition of modern fire trucks, and the establishment of an ambulance service. His contributions were recognized beyond Orfordville, as he served two terms as President of the Northern Illinois Southern Wisconsin Firefighters Association. He was a 20-year member of the fire science advisory committee at Blackhawk Tech and served as an officer or member of many state firefighting organizations.
